My bees are going strong so far. I looked in on them today and found brood up in the honey super. I didn't think they were supposed to do that but the last bunch did the same thing. I went out on a limb and took four frames that had brood from the super and started another hive. I heard one guy at the last bee keepers meeting say he had mixed results doing this but I thought I'd give it a try. All I really have to loose is a few bees and some foundation.

In situations where the bees have access to all of the comb in their hive, the queen will lay brood in different locations throughout the year. Beekeepers who use queen excluders will tell you that this is a *bad8 thing, but I believe bees have a better sense of what's good for them than beekeepers do.
ReplyDeleteOur state's head beekeeper which is also an entomologist agrees. He says they are also called honey excluders. I emailed him about this last year when I happened to me and he said something about bees not normally crossing honey frames. I still don't know what he meant by that.
